Sometimes you lose your desktop wallpaper in your computer and all you get is the Active Desktop Recovery screen above. Sometimes the Restore my Active Desktop button just doesn’t work. What to do?

  1. 1. Open My Computer or a Windows Explorer window.
  2. 2. Click Tools.
  3. 3. Click Folder Options.
  4. 4. Click View.
  5. 5. Uncheck the option for Hide protected operating system files.
  6. 6. Search for the file desktop.htt and delete them. This is normally under C:\Documents and Settings\your_user_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer.
  7. 7. Close the windows that you have open.
  8. 8. Go to Start.
  9. 9. Click Run
  10. 10. Type and enter REGEDIT
  11. 11. Go to this key in your Registry Editor:
      1.          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\SafeMode\Components
      2. 12. Change the value for the DeskHtmlVersion to 0 (zero) instead of decimal 272.
  12. 13. Reboot your PC. The desktop.htt file will be recreated by Windows when it restarts. Your Active Desktop will be fixed.
